About Us

We are a group for 6 to 14 1/2 year olds that operates in the North Bristol area, in Winterbourne, and we are part of the Cotswold Edge scout district. Winterbourne is part of South Gloucestershire.

The 1st Winterbourne Down & Buryside Scout Group were initially two separate scout groups formed in the 1960’s that amalgamated together in the 1980’s to form the current group. The group consists of a Beavers colony, (age 6 to 8 years old), a Cub pack (age 8 to 10 1/2 years old), and the Scout Troop (age 10 1/2 to 14 years old). We currently have approximately 65 children in the group at this time. The youngsters come from a wide variety of backgrounds and represent all of the local schools.

The scout association is clear about its purpose. To help young people achieve their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. Even if we can’t solve all of the problems in the world, we can help to make it a better place. We do this by helping young people to develop as active members of the community.

The group has a Group Scout Leader (GSL) who represents the scouting side of the group to the various district and national bodies. The GSL and the other leaders run the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. There is an Exec Committee which manages the Group as a Charity trust.

We are very lucky to own our Scout Hut. It has been rebuilt over many years as funds have been raised.
